Injuries, Deaths, and Displaced
It has been said that the tsunami that occurred after the Sumatra earthquake was the worst tsunami to ever occur. In total about 125,000 people were injured due to the earthquake and tsunami. Sri Lanka had the most injuries with 21,411 injuries. There were also many deaths. 227,898 people were killed. The majority of the deaths, injuries, and casualties were due to the tsunami.
The tsunami was so strong and powerful that there was serious deaths and damage as far as the east coast of Africa. The farthest recorded death was in Rooi Els in South Africa, which was, 5,000 miles away from the epicenter. Sadly, one third of the deaths (about 75,966) were children. This was because a high proportion of the children were the least able to resist being overcome by the surging waters. About 1.74 million people were displaced due to the earthquake and tsunami.
